June is here! If May temperatures are any indication of how hot summer is going to be, then we are in for a scorcher. While I will be focusing on surviving the heat, summer in the city has always brought a type of energy with it. You know the energy. Always something fun going on, longer days, late summer nights. Summer, welcome back old friend.
Here is how I am finding balance this June:
Bestie Day
The thing about maintaining adult friendships (especially long-distance friendships) is that sometimes you have to work a little harder to get in some quality. My besties and I were able to coordinate a day (more than a month in advance) that we could commit to being free. We left that weekend on our calendar and avoided making too many other plans. Alas, Bestie Day month has arrived!
Nat’s Game
One of my favorite summer activities is to attend at least one baseball game at Nats Stadium. I’m not a huge baseball fan, but there is something about the atmosphere that draws me in. Sweating in the stands under an open sky while cheering on the home team just screams summer.
The Lonely Island
I LOVED to watch SNL in my high school/college years. I’m still hoping to catch it live one day (it’s on my 30 before 30 list!). My favorite parts were always Weekend Update (I’m partial to Seth Meyers as the host) and the digital shorts. In my weekly viewing years, Andy Samberg was the king of the digital shorts and I could always count on them to be ridiculously funny and catchy. I wouldn’t dare choose a favorite short, they were that good! Well, Andy Samberg is one-third of the Lonely Island, a comedy trio that created the catchy (and often inappropriate) digital shorts! They are on tour and are going to bring back all of their best material. I can’t wait to belt the lyrics along (and see Andy because *swoon*).
Jazz in the Garden
This item is a repeat from last month’s bucket list because I was bummed that I didn’t get a chance to experience it! For those that don’t know, Jazz in the Garden is an ongoing DC summer tradition. Every Friday, there is Jazz act (mostly fusion) lined up to play in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art. The event is a unique way to unwind after a week of work!
Try an Insanity Class
Every once in a while one of my gym besties suggests that I should try an Insanity class, and I immediately refuse because I “know” that I am not going to like it. I don’t typically get into the habit of writing something off before I try it…so here goes nothing. If anyone can make the class tolerable, it’s my gym besties!
No Clothing Purchases
The harmful impact of “fast-fashion” has been on my mind a lot lately. I LOVE to buy new clothing, so much so that I often forget to enjoy and be grateful for the clothing that I do have. In addition, I am definitely guilty of buying something that I “can’t live without” just to discover it in my closet a season later, with tags. This month I am vowing not to buy any clothing (it’s going to be SO hard!). I am hoping that it will give me time to appreciate the warm weather clothing that I already have.
Reintroduce Meditation
Y’all. I have been stressed out lately. Not only that, but I have also noticed that I have been experiencing more unhealthy thoughts. Most of the thoughts have included falling into a FOMO spiral and worrying a little too much about other people’s opinions of me. I’m hoping to reintroduce meditation to help with the stress but to also recenter my mind.
This month, I am hoping to incorporate balance into my life by engaging in activities that are good for the soul.
