Christmas is rapidly approaching, and you probably already have a holiday party or two scheduled (or under your belt). Dressing for holiday parties can be a little all over the place depending on the type of party. Do you grab your ugliest Christmas sweater and leggings? Or, should you grab your most sparkly dress? Can you get away with Christmas pajamas or just stick with holiday colors or accessories?
The correct answer, for me at least, is usually all of the above. Between holiday parties at work, events, or gatherings with friends and family, I am fortunate to get a little bit of everything in terms of holiday fashion. While this excites me, I still inevitably have a “WHAT DO I WEAR!?” spiral. When I have these moments, my favorite fashion hack is to create an elevated casual look.
It’s no secret that I LOVE a good leather skirt in the colder months. After Thanksgiving, I trade in my “pumpkin spice” look (shown here) for my favorite December color combo: black and red. I’m literally going to be wearing this exact outfit to a Christmas party this weekend with the addition of my black pearl headband.
Why do I consider this an elevated casual look? During the holidays, I like to take comfortable, casual elements and give them something a little extra to look more put together. For example, I love my comfortable red American Eagle sweater and would typically wear it with a pair of leggings (example pictured below). Still a cute look, but definitely more casual than I want for a holiday gathering.
However, if I tuck the sweater into my leather skirt, the look is instantly transformed! Throw in a bold lip and pearl embellished headband (or any statement headband of choice). BOOM. You have yourself an elevated casual look.
