Happy New Year, Ambitious Fam! I love the magic of a fresh start–whether it be a new year, a new month, or a new day! The opportunity to seize the day and decide how you want to show up for yourself and your life is there, you just have to decide to take it. New years are particularly poetic as it feels like you have a completely blank notebook that you get to fill however you choose. The possibilities feel endless.
Also, I can’t believe that we are about to embark on another year of monthly bucket lists! This will be my 4th (FOURTH!) year of creating these lists that prioritize personal growth and fun in life. Thank you for being part of this journey with me!
Here is how I am finding balance this January:
Use the 5 Second Rule
Have you heard of the 5 Second Rule? No, I’m not talking about the rule that suggests that you can eat things off the ground if you beat bacteria to it. A few years ago, Mel Robbins gave a Ted Talk and wrote a book about how our brain kills our instincts with doubt if we don’t decide to physically take action within 5 seconds. The rule is simple: when you get an instinct to act on a goal, count down from 5 and jump into physical action. While Mel Robbins suggests that this works on almost every aspect of life, I am going to primarily test it to “launch out of bed” instead of hitting the snooze (which is why she invented the rule in the first place!).
Maintain a Usable Desk Space
My desk has been the “catch-all” place in my space for longer than I care to admit. It’s constantly stacked with random mail, gadgets, or other items that collect throughout the week. I want to reclaim my space this month by clearing it off so that I can use it functionally as a desk. Not just any desk, but a desk that I actually want to work at throughout the day instead of defaulting to my couch or external spaces.
Re-Evaluate Financial Plan
January is a great time to reflect on what worked well and what didn’t work financially. I have some big financial goals that I want to reach over the next few years, so this will give me the opportunity to adjust my financial plans and budgets to help reach those goals.
Create a Goodreads Account
Creating a Goodreads account has been something on my to-do list for a while now, but I have been too lazy to actually set up and utilize the account. Goodreads is a website that allows people to recommend and share their thoughts on the books they read. It is also a tool that allows you to track the books that you have read as well as create lists for books that you want to read. It’s kind of like a social platform for book lovers! Currently, (because this post is super late haha) I am finishing up my first two books of 2020, so I figured it would be the perfect time to start maintaining the platform. I still plan to share my book reviews on the blog as well, but the Goodreads account will help me keep things organized. Plus, it is owned by Amazon, so it will integrate with how I primarily consume books (i.e. on my kindle and audible).
Apple Activity New Year Challenge
If you have an Apple Watch, then you are familiar with the monthly and holiday challenges that the watch prompts. This month, in addition to the January challenge, the activity app launched a New Year Challenge to close all of your rings (move, exercise, and stand) 7 days in a row. Its been a while since I have had a “perfect” week across all three rings, so I thought that this would be a great challenge to start of the new year!
At-Home Dirty Chai Latte Recipe
I am obsessed with my Nespresso machine that I got for Christmas! I have been able to create the most delicious latte recipes from it! One of the reasons that I looked forward to using the machine was so that I could make my own dirty chai lattes at home instead of defaulting to Starbucks. This month I hope to tweak the recipe in hopes of finding one that is equally delicious as it is easy!
This month, I am focusing my attention on setting my self up for success in 2020.
