It’s the unofficial start of the holiday season (yay!) and you may be on the hunt for some gifts for loved ones and yourself (no shame–I love to give myself presents for holidays and special occasions :P). This year more than ever, I think that it is important to support small businesses whenever possible. There are so many reasons to shop small. A few of my favorites are that you can often find that their products are ethically/sustainably produced, there is so much passion and thought put into every single product, they stimulate their local economy, and they tend to give back in big ways. You’ll notice that a few of the shops on my list support big causes–part of the reason that I love them so much! If you are interested in more ways that you can give back this holiday season, please check out my friend Caitlin’s Paying it Forward gift guide which includes 14 great organizations to give to!
The businesses featured in this guide support Women and/or POC-owned small businesses. In addition, these are all businesses that I own items from (I’ll specify under each listing) and therefore I can personally vouch for the product’s quality and the business’s customer service. Basically, these are businesses that I love and I am happy to support!
Here 10 small businesses that you should shop from this holiday season:
Abode Candle Co
Inspired by the feeling of belonging, being surrounded by love, and the idea of rest, Abode Candle Co is a Woman-owned soy candle company based out of Maryland. Their candles are hand-poured US grown soy wax which is a more eco-friendly alternative to your typical paraffin candle because it is a biodegradable and renewable resource. The scents that I purchased smelled so good and burned beautifully. I loved the simple design and that I will be able to reuse the jar!
Aisha Branch Studio
Aisha Branch is an Iranian-American illustrator that produces beautifully diverse pieces of art on a variety of products. Ever since finding the artist on Instagram, I have loved following along with her product launches and behind the scene glances at her family life.

It’s no secret that I am absolutely OBSESSED with Dudley Stephens. I have purchased Dudley for myself and I have gotten the opportunity to work with them this year by contributing to the DS Fit Guide on their website. The Women-founded small business specializes in sustainable, recycled-fleece, US-made apparel that is the coziest in the game. Not only have they worked to redirect over 1,000,000 plastic bottles from becoming environmental waste by fashioning them into their fleece products, but they also have been working towards a $100,000 donation goal to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for the year! Stay tuned for my All things Dudley post hitting the blog this Sunday!

House of Shan
House of Shan is an amazing small Woman-owned business that features their signature imperfect heart symbol. Shannon believes that women are better together and has made it her mission to spread love, positivity, and give back to women’s charities. This year alone they have been able to raise over 16,000 for different women’s charities! Through November and December, $5 from every purchase will support House of Good Sheppard–a charity in Chicago that helps women and children who are affected by domestic violence.
I was first introduced to House of Shan through their collaboration with Ailsa (@_happygocurly_) in which I was gifted the Happy Tee. The tee is made of an indescribably soft material and I love having a representation of love and acceptance to wear. I have also been eyeing a few of the shop’s “LWYL” (live what you love) items!
What I got: Happy Tee (navy)
Current Promotions: Discounted accessories and free shipping over $100. Also donating $10 (instead of $5) to House of Good Sheppard this weekend!
InBooze Infusion Kit
InBooze is a Black and Woman-owned small business that specializes in cocktail infusion kits. Her goal was to find a healthier and easier way for people to create drinks at home. The InBooze infusion kits allow you to know exactly what is going in your cocktail and experiment with fun drinks. This would be a great gift idea for any of your cocktail connoisseur friends and family! They are expected to have a major restock on Sunday, but there are still plenty of great options to choose from!
Founded by sisters Lucy and Michele, L&M Company is a small, women-owned business right out of Richmond, Virginia! Their leggings are produced in the US and feature a super-high waist design. I was gifted a pair of black Active Legging from L&M and they are so good! I’ve worn them on walks and to an outdoor boxing class–they stay put and I love that they hit right at the ankle (no bunching!). I’ve heard great things about their Staple Legging as well so I’ve added it to my wishlist (coming to the blog soon!).
What I got: Active Legging (black)
Current Promotions: Use code “2020SALE10” for 10% off 1 or code “2020SALE15” for 15% off 2+ through December 5th.
Libro.fm has been allowing me to reduce my dependence on Amazon and I love it. The subscription service allows you to purchase audiobooks through your local bookstores, which allows your money to support your local economy instead of lacing the pockets of a multi-billionaire. For the record, I’m not entirely anti-Amazon and I believe that it is a great resource for people who would otherwise not have access to products and in a timely fashion. I just like the idea of being able to shop small when possible (hence this gift guide). While the company is not women-owned, it does allow for you to support women and/or POC-owned independent bookstores. My subscription currently supports the Old Town Books (which is woman-owned and local to me), but I love that you are able to switch it when you desire and to any participating bookstore in the country. Subscriptions and audiobooks can be a great gift for your peeps that love to read!
What I got: A membership (use this referral code for a free audiobook)
Another Virginia business, Polished Concrete is a Black and Woman-Owned shop that specializes in handmade, modern jewelry that is both eco-friendly and hypoallergenic. The shop also donates 75% of every purchase directly to their foundation charity which helps support Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers which was inspired by the founder’s relationship with her grandmother. I have loved being able to support Brittany (the founder) and seeing the cool products that she creates, many of which are inspired by her background in industrial engineering and construction.

Sweet Mint Homemade Goods
Based in Maryland, Sweet Mint Homemade Goods is a woman-owned small business that specializes in mugs and other home products. I first met Chloe (founder) at a 2018 pop-up shop in Annapolis, MD, and the mug is still in heavy rotation and in great condition! I have been following along with her shop on Instagram and I love seeing the behind the scene process as well as her life. She’s currently pregnant with twin boys and in the process of moving! This year I purchased a few more mugs as gifts that have already been shipped off so that they can be enjoyed for the holiday season.
Current Promotions: All Orders of 2+ Items will get 2 Free Campfire Mugs! (no code needed)
Worthy + Badass
Worthy + Badass is a Black and Woman-owned small business that is passionate about creating pieces that encourage, empower, and enlighten women. The shop sells a variety of handmade products including jewelry, accessories, and home & garden items (you may recognize one item from my plant giveaway!).
What I got: Monstera propagation station
